Applicants for individual licenses must meet basic licensing requirements and the Newfoundland security guard training qualifications before applying to receive a license.

Individual licenses are issued for a 1-year term and are subject to the terms and conditions of the Act, Regulations, and Policy. Applicants should familiarize themselves with these documents and their rights and responsibilities under the legislation. A temporary license may be issued to an agent to act as a private investigator for a period not to exceed 4 months in a 12 month period and the issue of the temporary license shall not be subject to proof of successful completion of a Newfoundland security guard training course or examination.

When we train students, including our own Commissionaires guards, we train to the exacting standards of the Canadian General Standards Board, at no additional cost. We are one of the few organizations who provide this added level of training. Commissionaires is a qualified provider of security guard training, approved by the CGSB. Our courses are designed to familiarize students with, and qualify them to perform, the roles and responsibilities of a security worker.

The security guard online training course is 40 hours followed by an exam. Students can be enrolled in the course at anytime. The company that you are working for should look after the process to renew your security guard licence but it is your responsibility to ensure that your licence does not expire.

You can not work with an expired licence. If you renew AFTER your licence expires then there is an extra fee to handle the criminal record check and this will delay the issuing of a new licence. Requirements for a Saskatchewan Security Guard licence can be found here. Temporary security guard licences may be issued to security guards who have not completed the mandatory training.

These are only valid for 6 months and cannot be renewed. The expiry date of your licence is printed on the front of your licence card. It is your responsibility to renew your licence prior to the expiry date. It is recommended that you submit your renewal application and payment at least a month and a half in advance of licence expiry. The individual licence renewal application form can be found here. As the licence holder, you are responsible for keeping all of your related licensing documents up to date with the Private Investigators and Security Guards Program.

This includes your criminal record check, child abuse registry check, and photographs. If you allow your licence to expire or lapse you may no longer work as a security guard or private investigator, and must immediately return your licence to the Registrar.

You may also be required to make a complete application re-submission. Failure to submit renewals for your criminal record check, child abuse registry check and photograph prior to their expiry may affect the status of your licence and you may also no longer be able to work as a security guard or private investigator.
