Windows xp freeze random

I had a similar not the same, but still related to an SAV error issue on one of my machines and thats what it took for that one. Thanks, would need to think hard about that one as we are a small organisation and the Sophos server is on our AD DC o: Having said that, if Sophos don't come up with a fix - it may well come to that!

I have had the exact same problem under very similar circumstances. We upgraded from sophos 7. The mouse will respond, but the keyboard will not. Workstations which have not yet been updated to Sophos 9 do not have the problem. The issue appears to be isolated to Windows XP machines running Sophos 9. Likewise we pushed out the upgrade from sophos 7. We still have legacy updating enabled and clients who still run version 7.

All workstations are in a known configuration, and all have similar windows updates installed and are identical in OS configuration. The only solution so far was to uninstall sophos 9 and re-install sophos 7. Wednesday, October 28, PM. Hi Zack, it would appear that a regkey change provided by Sophos has fixed the issue fingers crossed , I will post more info if I can get it - you would hope Sophos would make this an update for everyone and push it out?

Thursday, October 29, AM. I have just been off the phone with Sophos and say they are not aware of a registry fix, can you post it if you can?

Hi, Same problem here, but also getting other event ID's It does appear to be random, but I've a couple of users who keep freezing so I've re-created them in AD to see if a fresh profile will help.

No freezes so far but it's too soon to be sure. I'll report futher if this helps. Thursday, October 29, PM. We are starting to see this same problem or something very similar on many of our systems. Friday, October 30, AM.

Now I have picked out our worst case user approx 3 hours of expensive Drawing Office lost time for him today and completely uninstalled cleaned registry and deleted folders as well and re-installed 9 to see if this helps.

Luckily just one user out of two hundred. Thanks for posting Zach, we will see if Sophos in the UK can come up with anything here! NB - just found today that the trace files will fill up any C: drives short on space - one guy had a over files since last week and another had one which was 2GB! Monday, November 2, AM. Monday, November 2, PM. Hi Everyone I too am experiencing computer crashes across our offices since moving to v9. I have started to downgrade the computers to version 7 and this, as mentioned above appears to be the short term fix.

What worries me is that we beta tested this software for Sophos and had no problems like this, so since then and now the release candidate has gone awry somehow? On a side note, when the computers lock up, if you leave them for about half an hour they do come back to life!?

Well they do in my testing anyway! But half an hour wait for a user is unacceptable. No news from Sophos, I have a support request I dont anticipate a fix anytime soon Tuesday, November 3, AM.

I've bit the bullet and started to downgrade to V7. I'm going to try setting the rest to install V7 at 'startup' and hope this is s little better. Result to follow. Tuesday, November 3, PM. We have also decided to downgrade to 7 just getting too much lost time for certain users.

At this time we are still downloading the binaries and as we have been experiencing a very slow internet service all day for some reason, it wont be ready tonight. Just wanted to add another to the list experiencing the exact same problem.

Downgrading users to 7 as I type this. And one more victim. Our college is switching its site license from McAffee to Sophos, so I don't have a previous version to downgrade to. I was in contact with Sophos support, and they had me doing the debug logging, etc, but I can't really have our workstations locking up at all, so it isn't practical to build up huge logs "hoping" a workstation will lock up. We're just rolling back to McAffee while we decide what to do.

And I haven't heard anything back since I sent them a link to this discussion. They were really prompt up until then. Not sure I agree with your thoughts on Mcafee John but I am not bothered one way or another. But I digress o; We have noticed the downgrade seems to work although seemingly you need to enable Sophos again on the client PC's.

I would doubt we will upgrade to 9 anytime soon, even if Sophos announce a "fix" Wednesday, November 4, AM. We have now successfully downgraded to v7 which went without a hitch simply by changing the update policy back to 'Recommended 7'. What is most frustrating for us is though is that we were counting on v9 to be able to block USB flash drives and yesterday we took stock of our Ironkeys!!

We were also asked to provide 'extra beta testing' for Sophos but have flatly refused to continue to be their testing department. I like Sophos too, I thought it was a good product and only this year we bought into a 3 year deal Wednesday, November 4, PM.

I'm having the same problem as described here, i upgraded my management console a few weeks back and have only just decided to upgrade my clients to SAV 9 last week. The crashing of the computers has only just started this week, i only just found out what the problem was as to be honest i wasn't really THAT bothered at the beginning, i just thought my users were making a big deal out of nothing, as they usually do sorry guys.

Then it started happening to more people which was when i knew something more serious was afoot. I thought it was my file server peaking at maximum load and crashing my users office packages and then computer, but when i looked at a clients event log i saw the SAVOnAccessControl error, then i checked everyone's computer who had reported a crash, same thing This looks quite bad from a Sophos front, they have released a new package without testing it properly, surely not? I have found this update on the clients with the crash problem and it is the most recent one installed in the time frame where the crashes have happened.

I hate to do someone else's job for them but it feels like this isn't going to fixed quickly i have users that could be affected and i don't really feel like downgrading, there's always a fix for something like this, we just have to put our heads together. Also i can confirm this does not affect Windows 7, i have a test bed and this hasn't happened once on any of them, another good reason why W7 is good stuff.

Edited by jstoy Wednesday, November 4, PM addition. The problem has affected some from each group. We have Dell and HP workstations of various models from standard to high end workstations, nothing common about them there was only 1 laptop reported a hang. Although we seem to have been successful in downgrading the clients, the server console still apparently thinks it's downloading the binaries for v7 and our internet has been slow for a couple of days now, possibly as a result.

We had the lockups on both. I see event in various event logs all the time, but I don't think it's correlated to the machines that lock up. We did have Conficker show up on a couple of workstations. I'm cautiously proceeding with installation of v. So far so good, but my confidence in this product is shot. It would help if they at least replied to my last email with some indication that they're looking into it.

I had a long hard think about this last night, woke up about 4am after having a bizarre dream where i was arrested by the police and a police dog bit my hand which by the way; was made out of play dough i decided to downgrade to SAV 7 :. I'm downloading the binaries now, luckily the new update manager can just downgrade to 7 just by selecting a new package. This annoys me very much, as most of you say my confidence now in Sophos is broken and i will be looking for a different provider next year, unfortunately I've only just renewed.

Also I've told my peers about the features of Sophos 9 regarding the USB device control and the data control so they are going to be expecting to see the results At least when I upgrade all my computers to W7 i can use 9, but will i?

I've proposed ZackinMA's first post as the answer as its the first one to suggest a downgrade to 7, which is the only way to fix this issue. Thursday, November 5, AM. Hi Optiplan, I think the downgrade using the Server console was the correct answer as opposed to downgrading from a network share.

It would appear to me that this is what we have all done. Many thanks again Zach! I wouldn't be surprised if Sygate Personal Firewall had something to do with it.

After my experiences with Symantec Endpoint Protection which was based on a Sygate product I wouldn't recommend a Sygate product to anyone. We had massive stability issues with server and client computers after installing initial release of Symantec Endpoint Protection. In particular, the "Teefer. Thanks, Cheers.
