I have been dealing with the Nokia support centre in Australia and they don't seem to be able to tell me how to get maps to work. The problem is that the is not listed and without downloading maps the map installer will not recognise the phone as being suitable to load maps to.
Since your classic is an S40 device, you are correct in telling that your phone will only support Nokia Maps for S40 and the maps application is pre-loaded and cannot be upgraded. It also appears that the latest Nokia Maps Updater or Loader does not support Classic device, thus, downloading of map data cannot be supported as well.

Because phone asks to connect internet and download maps when you start the application.. You can download maps to the using Ovi Suite. This isn't mentioned in the user manual, the online support for the or the maps part of the Nokia website. The phone has to be connected to the computer for the maps part of Ovi Suite to show anything at all. My came with all Australian maps already installed down to street level.
It will find any address without looking online, but not when the postcode is entered instead of the suburb name. The "Map Loader" software can be downloaded without the need to enter the " classic" device because you only need to select a device to "Download OviMaps" not the MapLoader and "OviMaps" software is not needed on the because it's pre-installed.
